Announcing the Final #geomob Speaker Line Up

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Earlier this month we were deeply chuffed to announce that Yahoo! Geo Technologies would be hosting the first #geomob meetup in London of 2009 at Wallacespace in Covent Garden. After much hard work on the part of Chris Osborne, the organiser and founder of #geomob, the final speaker line up can be announced.

The meme for this meetup continues to be exploring the connection between context, location and device and there will now be four exciting and visionary speakers:

  • Russell Middleton from the Google Geo team; at the last meetup Yahoo! Geo Technologies spoke at a Google supported event and it seems only fitting that we will now have Google speaking at a Yahoo! supported event. Russell will be talking about some of the lesser known features of Google Maps together with a review of their newly launched features.
  • Andrew Scott, founder of rummble.com, the location based social search and discovery tool.
  • Alfie Dennen, the man behind Moblog, Britglyph, StoppedClocks and What Is The Question? will be talking on ‘The Internet of Places, or, How to Get a Man to Stand in a Field in Glasgow. At Midnight’. Alfie will be revealing more as he talks about fusing mapping, GPS, ARG/Gaming elements and art
  • Terry Jones, the inventor of FluidDB and founder of fluidinfo.com. Terry will be talking about FluidDB, the database with the heart of a wiki. With commendations from tech evangelists such as Robert Scoble and Tim O’Reilly, this will provide a fascinating end to a packed and varied set of speakers.

Unfortunately the guest list for this event is currently closed and at capacity but head over the the official #geomob site and sign up for news and announcements on this and future meetups.

#geomob in London and Yahoo! Geo Technologies

Friday, January 9th, 2009

2009 looks set to be geo’s breakout year with Trendwatching.com identifying maps and geo as a key emergent area, with Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft all continuing to see the importance and relevance of location and place and a whole host of new startups and established players continuing to drive all things geo forward and even more into the public’s attention and perception.

geomobThe development of the grass roots geo community in London is following this trend; ably demonstrated by #geomob, the London geo and mobile developers meetup group.Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural meetup, the first #geomob meetup of the year will be held in London on January 29th 2009. Yahoo! Geo Technologies are deeply chuffed to be associated with and to support this event.

The meme for this meetup will be exploring the connection between context, location and device and there will be three exciting and visionary speakers:

  • Russell Middleton from the Google Geo team; at the last meetup Yahoo! Geo Technologies spoke at a Google supported event and it seems only fitting that we will now have Google speaking at a Yahoo! supported event.

The meetup will be chaired, overseen and pushed in the right direction by #geomob’s founder and organiser, Chris Osborne.

For this meetup we will be using the excellent facilities offered by Wallacespace, at 2 Dryden Street, Covent Garden, WC2E 9NA, kicking off at 6.00 PM with speakers starting at around 6.30 PM. Each speaker will present for around ten minutes leaving plenty of time for questions.

We’ll be providing free wifi access, plus drinks, snacks and nibbles and in addition to the Yahoo! Geo Technologies group, our colleagues at the Yahoo! Developer Network will be joining us and dispensing all manner of Yahoo! branded schwag to the audience.

Attendance at the meetup is free but numbers will be restricted to around 60, so please head over to http://gmdlondon.ning.com to register, RSVP and ensure your place.
