What Happened to Classic Maps?

Thank you for all your messages telling us how useful the Classic Map service has been. Because most of our customers have transitioned to use the new interactive map application, we decided to discontinue the Classic Map version. This allows us to focus our effort on delivering an extraordinary customer experience on the new Yahoo! Maps.

We’re encouraging our Classic Map customers to try out some of these new features:

  • Enhanced map navigation – To pan or move the map, simply click and drag the map in the direction you want to go.
  • Saved & recent locations – For your convenience, your saved and recent locations are now available both within Maps and elsewhere on Yahoo, such as Local and Weather.
  • Waypoint support – Get driving directions for trips with multiple stops.
  • Personalized routing – Create your own custom route via drag and drop.
  • Integrated business search – Find businesses and points of interest on the map.
  • Interactive print page – Customize the print page to include only the information you need.
  • Live Traffic – Improved presentation of live traffic information on the map.

Stay tuned for updates and improvements throughout 2009.

This new version isn’t as useful to me as the classical one. Would it be possible to run both versions side by side and give users a choice?

  2. Pascal G. says:

Why live traffic is not working on Montreal area?
    Thanks.

Waldek – We decided to focus our resources to support a single application, which is the new interactive one. We do not have plan to bring back the classic maps version. It would be helpful to understand why the new version is not as useful as the classic maps version. We welcome your input.

Pascal – We currently do not have traffic data for Canada. We are working with our data provider to expand coverage. Stay tuned.

The route that defaulted was not the one I recommend, so I tried to use the the drag and drop feature to alter the route. But the only thing it did was reroute me to the original route it wanted me to use. I find that taking US27 to US192 is a much nicer ride than the toll way SR-429. I liked the old maps much better.

One of the bigest coplaints I have is on the clasic map you could put in the address, city & state and the web site would give you the zip code. Now I have to use yahoo maps and USPS web site to be able to get the same information. Takes more time, more steps. Thinking about looking around for a web map site that will do both like the Clasic Yahoo Map did.

I do like the ability to adjust your route by the drag and drop, but it seems everytime I do this it loops at the end and drives me back some where in the middle of the route. Is there a fix for this or am I just doing it wrong?
    Thank you, Bill Thomas

  6. LV says:

My biggest loss – the classic maps would store my last entered locations (7+ entries) even if I logged out and for up to several days. The new one won’t store it for a day or even to other tabs/windows. I also miss the feature of it giving me the zip code. It was something I used frequently.

I used to put in an address and get nearby hotels….now every address I put in says nothing can be found. I’m very frustrated
